Chapter Four
“And this is her…this is the mortal that all this stupid fuss is about?”
“Yes, my Queen, it is.”
“How tedious.” Titania studied Maggie closely, from the top of her head to the tips of her feet, standing as she was on a carpet covered with evidence of a very wild party.
No woodland glade for Titania’s court it would seem, the house Maggie had been brought to was as luxurious as it was secluded.
The Queen of the fairies finished her perusal of Maggie, tossing her own strawberry blonde hair over her shoulder and pouting at the man who had brought Maggie to her. “She’s so very plain. Don’t you think, Mab?”
Titania was a statuesque woman, rubenesque, with the kind of hour glass figure that could start a war.
“Any sign of Oberon?” Titania asked.
“No, my Queen,” Mab replied, glancing at Maggie as he spoke.
You liar!
Maggie glared back at him.
Liar! But Maggie could say nothing, had been able to say nothing since Mab had abducted her from her ringside seat at the Jack and Ronnie show.
And boy had it been a show.
A down and dirty fight between two gorgeous men followed by a noisy bout of seriously graphic lovemaking always featured highly on Maggie’s list of essentials for a great night out.
“Why does Oberon treat me so coldly, Mab?” Titania turned her beautiful face towards Mab who stared down at her, his strange pale ghostlike eyes scanning her features.
Cold calculating eyes, Maggie thought.
“Maybe because he does not truly appreciate you, my liege,” Mab replied.
“You know, I don’t think he does”—Titania’s pout was a work of art, her loose curls dancing once more about her head as she shook it with a childlike emphasis—“but he will. He will when I’ve tied Jack to our side, Mab.”
Maggie gave a start of surprise. I don’t think so, not from what I’ve seen!
“Of course he will,” Mab assured her, his reply was as smooth as it was placating. “Leave it to me.”
Titania studied Mab for a long moment before nodding and turning to leave.
“You are a loyal subject, Mab,” she said as she left the room.
Mab turned to look at Maggie.
Maggie looked back at Mab, her eyebrows raised.
You did see what I saw, right? She knew what she was thinking translated directly to her expression.
Maggie could also feel a nervous sweat starting to bead on her back. Mab was trouble, big trouble.
“So…Maggie…Margaret”—Mab smiled at her—“can I call you Margaret?”
“Everyone calls me Maggie,” Maggie snapped, her words out of her mouth before she had even realised she could talk again. She covered her mouth with a sob of relief as she did.
“I…will call you Ms Short,” Mab declared as he sat down, pulling her to sit beside him.
He crossed his legs in front of him and extended his arms along the back of the sofa. The power exuded by his spare frame made the hairs on the back of Maggie’s neck stand on end.
Oberon was right, she realised, the most dangerous individual at work within Titania’s court was most definitely Mab.
